I found this old Underwood 5 typewriter in a church that was selling off some stuff. It still works smoothly after so many years. The serial number is 361551-5 and it was made in 1911. The decals are still reasonable. The typewriter has been checked again, cleaned up a bit and it works wonderfully. It has a new 2 color ribbon.

John Underwood was a ribbon maker. His most important client was Remington. In 1893, Remington decided to make their own ribbon and John Underwoord started his own typewriter company. The first Underwood machines were designed in 1895 by Franz Wagner. They were very special because they made typing immediately visible. The visible Underwood typewriter became a huge hit. The first model - 5 - was introduced in 1901. Thanks to this typewriter, Underwood dominated the market for decades.
